چکیده

A unique experimental system is devised that reveals the interplay among capillary force and alternating intermolecular forces. As a consequence of the interplay, untrathin ~,10 nm! liquid films, which invariably experience dewetting, can be made stable, leading to a smooth and dropless minimum-potential surface. Theory and experiment show that the film thickness is ,1 nm when the film recedes in spite of the capillarity and it is ,3 nm when it rises into a cavity. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1502653#

Capillary wrinkling of floating thin polymer films.

A freely floating polymer film, tens of nanometers in thickness, wrinkles under the capillary force exerted by a drop of water placed on its surface. The wrinkling pattern is characterized by the number and length of the wrinkles. The dependence of the number of wrinkles on the elastic properties of the film and on the capillary force exerted by the drop confirms recent theoretical predictions ...

Structure of liquid ethylene glycol: A molecular dynamics simulation study with different force fields

The structure of liquid ethylene glycol at room temperature is examined by performing molecular dynamics ~MD! simulation studies for several different liquid phase force fields. We compare the properties obtained and analyze the differences which arise from the use of these models. A thorough study of molecular conformation and intermolecular structure for the different potential models is carr...

Nanoscale Polymer Electrolytes: Ultrathin Electrodeposited Poly(Phenylene Oxide) with Solid-State Ionic Conductivity

Incorporating ions within electrodeposited polymer dielectric films creates ultrathin solid electrolytes on a length scale (<50 nm) that bridges molecular electronics and conventional electrochemical devices. Electrooxidation of phenol in basic acetonitrile generates electrodeposited nanoscale (21 ( 2 nm), pinholefree poly(phenylene oxide), PPO, films on indium-tin-oxide substrates. Solid-state...

Ultrathin Polypeptide Multilayer Films for the Fabrication of Model Liquid/Liquid Electrochemical Interfaces

Ultrathin (<20 nm) polypeptide multilayer films are assembled by the electrostatic adsorption of alternating monolayers of poly(L-lysine) and poly(L-glutamic acid) onto carboxylic acid terminated alkanethiol-modified gold surfaces. These polypeptide multilayer films are hydrophilic, can bind electroactive anions such as ferri/ ferrocyanide, and are stable when immersed in organic solvents such ...

Nanotribological characterization of fluoropolymer thin films for biomedical micro/nanoelectromechanical system applications

A vapor phase deposition system was designed to coat uniform, conformal and ultrathin coatings of fluoropolymer and fluorosilane thin films inside silicon nanochannels. Surface modifications using vapor phase deposition become increasingly important for biomedical micro/nanoelectromechanical system BioMEMS/NEMS applications and have advantages over liquid phase deposition since the vapor can pe...
